How to keep a car interior clean and fresh longer

Half of interior care is small regular habits. Here they are, and when professional cleaning is worth it.

Most interior dirt builds up gradually. Small regular habits stretch the time between professional cleans considerably.

Regular habits

  • A quick weekly vacuum: grit and crumbs are removed before they work into the carpet and seat gaps.
  • Wipe with damp microfibre: dust on the dashboard and console scratches plastic if wiped dry; a slightly damp cloth is better.
  • Blot spills straight away: press with a paper towel rather than rubbing; rubbing spreads the stain.
  • Air the cabin: moisture and odours linger most in a closed, damp car.

Where does the smell come from?

An odour usually goes once its source is found and cleaned: food that fell under a seat, liquid soaked into the carpet or a damp air vent. Perfuming a surface masks a smell rather than removing it.

Leather and plastics

Leather needs regular cleaning and conditioning or it dries and cracks. For plastics prefer balanced (pH-neutral) cleaners and avoid harsh solvents.
