Bought a new car: what to do in the first months
Protecting paint at its best is easier and cheaper than correcting it later.
A new car's paint is at its best, but "new" does not always mean "smooth and protected".
Dirt picked up in transit
Between the factory and you, the car travels by road, rail and ship and waits in holding areas. The paint can carry invisible iron dust, tar and industrial fallout. If it feels slightly rough to the hand, that is why.
A sensible order
- Wash and decontamination: bonded contamination is removed.
- Light correction if needed: fine swirls from dealer handling and transport are removed.
- Protective layer: PPF, ceramic coating or both, depending on how you drive.
- Interior protection: a protective treatment for seats and plastics.
Why straight away?
Protecting paint before it is marked is easier and needs less intervention than polishing it out later. Polishing removes a very small amount of clear coat; if none is needed, none is removed.
Washing habits
How long protection lasts depends largely on how you wash: neutral shampoo, clean microfibre and a brush-free method. Brush car washes leave new swirls.
